The NBA says it will recommend a lockout after the league and players failed to reach a new collective bargaining agreement.
The current deal expires at midnight ET, and negotiations are expected to resume next week.
The breakdown in talks came about two weeks after the Dallas Mavericks won the NBA championship to cap a season that Commissioner David Stern said was not profitable for most of the league's 30 owners.
