Same-sex marriage is to become legal in Maine and Maryland, CNN projects.
It is the first time that same-sex marriage has been approved by a popular vote, not court action or in a legislature. The result of a vote on the same issue is still pending in Washington, as is a measure that would ban same-sex marriage in Minnesota.
