Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy has canceled his decree giving him sweeping powers but plans to push forward with a planned referendum December 15 on a draft constitution, said presidential adviser Mohamed Selim el-Awwa.
Protests erupted last month following Morsy's edict, a move that sat uncomfortably with many Egyptians who said it reminded them of ousted dictator Hosni Mubarak's rule. At the time, Morsy said the powers were necessary and temporary until a new constitution is adopted.
