President Barack Obama will appoint Danny Werfel as the acting IRS commissioner, the White House announced.

The move comes a day after acting Commissioner Steven Miller was forced to resign amid a controversy over the targeting of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status.

Werfel is currently the controller of the Office of Management and Budget.

"As we work to get to the bottom of what happened and restore confidence in the IRS, Danny has the experience and management ability necessary to lead the agency at this important time," Obama said in a written statement.
