President Obama says the United States "deplores" the violence against civilians in Egypt's military crackdown against protests in Cairo.
The cycle of violence and escalation in Egypt needs to stop, Obama said today. He called on Egypt to lift its state of emergency.
The president said the U.S. has canceled its upcoming joint military exercises with Egypt.
