Rick Santorum will win the Alabama Republican primary, CNN projects.

Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney are in a close battle for second.

Forty-seven of Alabama's 50 delegates are tied to the primary, and the state will award those delegates proportionally. A total of 1,144 delegates is needed to clinch the GOP nomination.

Santorum, coming off a big win in Kansas on Saturday, gave himself a boost in the battle to be the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney by beating Newt Gingrich on his home turf.

Mississippi is also holding a primary today, and Hawaii and American Samoa are holding caucuses.
